Daniel Webster (1782-1852), outspoken statesman
and
renowned orator, was a U.S. Senator from Massachusetts and was Secretary
of State for three U.S. presidents: William Harrison, John Tyler, and
Millard Fillmore.
“If religious books
are not now widely circulated among the masses in this country, I do not
know what is to become of us as a nation. . . If truth is not diffused,
error will be; if God and His Word are not known and received, the devil and
his works will gain the ascendancy. If the evangelical volume [Bible] does
not reach every hamlet, the pages of corrupt and licentious literature
will.”
From the life of
Daniel Webster:
“Daniel
Webster was born on Jan.18, 1782, near Franklin, N.H. . .
His
mother, an uncommonly intelligent woman, early discovered the boy’s
remarkable mental powers. She taught him all she knew and insisted that he
enter the local academy.
“When he was fifteen it was decided at a family conference that he must go
to college, no matter at what cost of self-denial for the others.
The
sensitive boy burst into tears at this proof of devotion and confidence in
his ability.” (Compton’s Encyclopedia [a Division of Encyclopedia
Britannica, Inc.] 1987, vol. 25, p.90)
